Fire in the Hole

Deadwood is one of my top five TV shows, but due to its cancellation in 2006, Justified is the closest I’m going to get to seeing Seth Bullock on screen again.

That’s not a bad thing, Timothy Olyphant is just as awesome as the modern day sheriff as he was as in the 1800’s, you could even say that his portrayal of Bullock pretty much made him a shoe in for the part.

Justified is a show about Deputy US Marshal Raylan Givens, after an incident in Miami where he is stationed at the start of the show, Raylan is sent back home to Harlan County, Kentucky.

From there on in what we have is a modern western, Stetsons and all.

The show is based on a number of books by Elmore Leaonard, the first episode; I believe is specifically based on the short story “Fire in the Hole.”

Ive not read any of these but due to how much I enjoy the show they are certainly on my reading list.

Raylan is the kind of lawman you can really get behind, tough, fair and willing to try unconventional but generally effective forms of law enforcement. The storylines are excellent, as is the acting; the characters are believable and likeable. You even find yourself having a soft spot for career criminals Boyd and Arlo, and it has some great one liners.

All in all its a fantastic show and if you haven’t yet watched it you really should, I’m not sure it’s up there with Deadwood, awesome as Raylan and his supporting cast are, the various bad guys don’t quite measure up to Al Swearengen, but then not many do.

But if like me, you felt a little hollow after the end of Deadwood it’s a good way to take a trip back to the Wild West, and let’s be honest few people wear a Stetson as well as Timothy Olyphant.
