Good day at work?

As you may remember from my previous post “Amy Farrah Fowler you have a lot to answer for” my wife is putting on a school production of Dr Horrible.

It seems things are now ramping up, I have spent the last 4 hours listening to it on repeat,  she has also over the last few days shown the kids the DVD, followed by auditions for the various parts.

Sadly this means that as she knows that there is a tenuous reason for me to be interested, she has spent even longer than normal telling me about her day. Now don’t get me wrong I want to know if she has had a good or bad day at work, in fact as I’m sure with most couples it’s the standard greeting when you get home.

“Hiya, how are you? did you have a good day at work?”

As a male the standard response to this is either

“Yes” or “No”

There is no real reason to elaborate, after all how much does your partner want to know about what Dave the intern did or didn’t do, or how the computer froze in the middle of your power point presentation, meaning you had read the rest of your presentation from the back of a beer mat.

As a female, it seems that standard response is to recount your day up to and including every conversation verbatim. Mentioning as many colleagues as is humanly possible, referring to all of them as if they have been family friends for the last decade.

“You know Henry, the PE teacher with the dodgy toupee, well anyways he was speaking to Mavis, you know, the English teacher who is sleeping with Javier the Janitor”

No, no I don’t know any of them. I’ve never meet Henry, and in the event that you did speak to me about Mavis and Javier there is a good chance I thought you where relating the plot of Eastenders .

Now I may well be being unfair here, I am sure there are some women out there, who are in a role reversal of my situation and have to listen to Bob babble on about the stock market, his end of year presentation and how the intern spilt coffee all over his fiscal projections for the next quarter.

I guess all I’m saying is “How are you?” and “Did you have a good day at work?” are both closed questions they require a simple yes or no answer.

If we really wanted to know, we would say.

“Tell me about your day?”
